Max Bent
Beatbox Artist & Community Facilitator

Transforming communities through the power of collective music making.

Growing up near Washington DC, I first learned to beatbox by mimicking the Go-Go rhythms I heard all around me. That early connection to local sound eventually led me into the heart of hip-hop culture: the communal cipher. Standing in those huddles, I was hooked by the power of the circle—the experience of playing a role, being heard, supporting one another, and collectively creating a sound far bigger than any individual can achieve alone.

Through years of busking and educational programs like Baby Beats and Outside the (Beat)box, I witnessed how open-ended music-making intuitively engages and empowers humans to improvise, create and express. Eventually, I merged my raw vocal roots with digital looping and music production to create the Beatbox Jam Session. I am grateful to be able to offer this experience to your community: a "moment outside of time" where everyone—regardless of skill—can pick up a mic or an instrument and instantly become part of a powerful, creative whole.

On the Philosophy of "Beautiful Errors"

"Human beings make beautiful errors that as they accumulate over a series of layers, create something that would be literally impossible to create intentionally."

"By allowing ourselves to make mistakes. And being open to those mistakes, we create something that we cannot create otherwise."

"In our current age, where so many of our tools are based around precision. It's nice to lean into tools that allow for error."

    On Community and Human Connection

"I think the original purpose of music was to bind people together in community."

"If we shine a light on those connection points, they're inherently beautiful, right? Like, our spirits are inherently beautiful, and our connections are inherently beautiful."

"I'm offering myself up as a facilitator for an experience that will very quickly become about us."

    On Education and Shifting Perspectives

"Teachers and parents are getting to see their own children and students with, with fresh eyes..."

"...a student that is difficult or challenging all of a sudden becomes a leader."

"We’ve readjusted the hierarchical structure because the circle is the authority... There's no need really for, there to be somebody who's in charge because it's the flow of the music that's guiding us."

On the Jam Session Experience & Live-Looping

"I like to think of the beatbox jam session as very much in that, in that energy, which is like open ended, come as you are. Listening is as important as playing..."

"Just bring your attention to what's happening around you. That's all I ask of anybody coming to a beatbox jam session."

"One of the really cool things about looping is these kind of ghosts that get captured in there from, from something that no longer even exists."
